05-28-2012: Another lunchtime catch up post. I really hate what most of my peers have done with Memorial Day. I know that it’s really up to each of us (once we reconcile our views on war and peace with our actual behavior), what we do our what we think of on Memorial Day, but I just never thought that the most one would do on Memorial day is post a meme chastising people for having BBQs on their day off.
I know I am a stickler for volunteering and I believe the best way to honor those that you believe provide service for you is to provide service for others. I know not everyone thinks that way and that’s okay. I get the pictures of family members who have served in the military, the naming of fallen veterans, the espousing of “freedom aint free” all over everything and everywhere, but I DO NOT get the memes about BBQs. Who’s memory does that honor? What action does it take? What satisfaction does it provide?
Want to point out that I didn’t see a shit ton of actual veterans debasing people for no reason (yeah, people, just because you know a veteran doesn’t mean you ARE a veteran, stop speaking for them).
I don’t know. It makes me feel surrounded by a bunch of people who wouldn’t lift a finger, clean up a tombstone, or hell, enjoy their day off with a BBQ to enjoy a base freedom.
I serve my community in more ways than one every day. I am proud of the people I know that believe they have served their country in the military and in other ways. I know when I go to bed that my grandpa would be proud of me.
I also went to a pool party/bbq and had an excellent time and enjoyed a marathon of NCIS… until of course they acted out a funeral for a marine at the very end of the marathon and I burst into tears and cried fairly violently for 2 minutes as I remembered the day we buried Vincent Kelly.
That’s a picture of a zucchini plant.
05-27-2012: Lunchtime update. We celebrated my friend Tiffany’s birthday at the Pub the other night (she is the one to the far right). It was great to be in a room with such great friends and familiar warm feelings.
I will always love City Year Louisiana/AmeriCorps for bringing me to New Orleans and for bringing me to more service, family, and more love.
05-26-2012: had some work done on my face… And got my hurrs did. Went to a going away pub crawl for a friend moving from New Orleans to Houston, didn’t get any pictures of that… Seemed pointless, he’ll be back.
Enjoy my gorgeous face…
05-25-2012: work pic is the only pic I got, kids backs to me sideways and blurry to protect identity. We had a leadership conference for our student leaders. They really are some amazing kids. And I’m proud of the adults that work with them.
Try not to talk about work on here so I’ll leave it at that.
05-24-2012: Made Chicken Adobo for the first time. It was such a positive experience. I did research through my family, Stockton homies and their families and www.thewilyfilipino.com.
I’m super proud of myself. It’s a super simple dish to make, but I was really worried it wouldn’t smell right. I was very concerned about it. But as soon as I mixed that apple cider vinegar and soy I knew that good things were going to happen.
Chicken Adobo is purported to be the national dish of the Phillipines. I won’t pretend I know ANYTHING about the Phillipines. I really don’t. I don’t speak Tagalog. I really only know that my dad’s parents came from there. That he is first generation American. I have some of my grandma’s (never met her as she passed away before I was born) cookbooks and would like to work through those in the coming year or two.
Nothing brings you closer to what you are and where you come from like food!
It was delicious. I have to tackle lumpia next but will need Patrick to help on that one for sure.
Check out this guy’s blog about adobo. I thought it was a nice read while I was marinating my food.
05-23-2012: Don’t read this post @the_Fallon. Fallon is my homie that y’all have seen before. He doesn’t like this book so he believes it’s overrated.
The buzz about the making of a movie for Dunces has reminded me to read it again. I first tried to read it as a teenager and didn’t care for it. Since living in New Orleans I’ve read it three or four times, loving it more each time.
News of the movie solicited an emotional response from a lot of New Orleanians. Ignatius having been too hard (fat?) to pin down in the past has led to a lot of failed attempts at making this movie. Who knows if Zach Galafanakis -I have no idea how to spell that fellows name correctly- can do it.
I am of the opinion that Ignatius Reilly lives in the hearts and minds of everyone who’s ever read and loved the book. And while he’s alive, no one can play him. Just an opinion. I’m no critic, just someone who’s read the book.
Anyway, glad for the reminder that I haven’t read it again this year and it’s a great way to kick off summer reading before I start school and HAVE to read (because let’s face it, y’all -I don’t read books as much as I used to) compulsory books.
PS It’s only late may and it’s mid 90s and hundo humidity. Just some stats FYA , fo yo ass.
05-22-2012: SnoBall recess. It’s summer and pandora is only few blocks away from the office. Anyone have some sugar free recommendations? I live within 4 blocks (on either side) of two other stands as well.
Some wild cherry.
05-21-2012: this is “make it stretch” pizza. This is not to say I couldn’t afford to buy pizza (though I’m not NOT saying it). I’m more trying to communicate that I not only had spent my entire pizza budget for the month already and that I like to eat everything that’s about to expire before I crack open other thangs. Breaux Mart bread lasts all of two days so I had to eat a lot of fake pizza.
05-20-2012: Went out to the Northshore to do the Tammany Trace again with my homie Re-Re. Saw gators and snakes and rode bikes as usual, but this time we got to meet Turts McGurts (it’s a turtle name).
Northshore is pretty. Trolling fountainbleau state park for exercise and nature thangs is not a bad way to get your cardio.
Louisiana is beautiful.
